Solar outdoor security cameras: how to choose (ieGeek S7, ZY-C2, ZS-GX4S, ZY-G4)

Wire-free outdoor cameras: Wi-Fi vs 4G, 24/7 vs motion recording, battery and SD specs from ieGeek datasheets (Oct 2026)—comparison, not hands-on review.

Also available in French.

A solar outdoor camera avoids trenching cable to a gate or garden shed: internal battery, small panel, phone app. Before buying, four questions matter: Wi-Fi or 4G, continuous or motion recording, battery size and local storage.

Wi-Fi vs 4G

  • Wi-Fi (S7, ZY-C2, ZS-GX4S): needs solid 2.4 GHz at the mount—test with your phone before drilling. No data plan for live view on LAN/WAN.
  • 4G (ZY-G4): SIM + data plan for sites with no broadband—outbuildings, plots, caravans.

Continuous (AOV) vs motion

  • Motion (ZY-C2, ZS-GX4S): PIR wake—best battery life; first seconds of an event may be clipped.
  • 24/7 AOV (S7, ZY-G4): always recording—larger 9000 mAh packs and up to 256 GB SD; winter sun and panel aim matter more.

Install checklist

  1. Panel: south-facing (northern hemisphere), ~30–45° tilt, minimal shade—3 m panel cable on datasheet.
  2. Height 2.5–3 m, lens on access paths not the horizon.
  3. microSD often not included—respect 128/256 GB limits.
  4. Panel operating range about −20 °C to 60 °C (spec).
  5. Fully charge battery before mount.

UK / US privacy

Film your property only. Avoid public pavement or neighbours’ gardens in frame—use app privacy/motion zones if the view includes the street.

  • UK: ICO home CCTV guidance
  • US: state and local surveillance laws vary—check before recording beyond your lot line.

Home Assistant note

These cameras are primarily vendor-app/cloud products. Local RTSP or official HA integrations vary by model and region—verify before buying if HA integration is mandatory. For a HA-centric home, see getting started and install Home Assistant. Backup during outages: UPS / power station guide.
