“Vacuum and mop” appears on almost every new robot, but the hardware varies wildly. A damp cloth dragged behind the bot is not the same as twin spinning pads. Here is how to read the specs—and what docks add.
| System | How it works | Stains | Carpets | Typical tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Drag pad | Damp cloth, robot weight only | Low: light upkeep | Avoid or remove pad | Entry |
| Vibrating pad | Plate vibrates against the floor | Medium | Often lifts pad | Mid |
| Rotating pads | Two discs spin under pressure | Good | Lift or detach on some models | Mid / high |
| Roller | Roller scrubs and rinses | Good | Lift | High |
Our default for most homes: rotating pads with auto lift—proper mopping without soaking rugs. On a tight budget, a drag mop still helps daily, like models in robots under £200 / $200.
| Dock function | What it does | You still do |
|---|---|---|
| Auto empty | Sucks dust bin into a bag | Change bag occasionally |
| Water fill | Tops robot tank from clean reservoir | Fill clean tank, empty dirty |
| Pad wash | Rinses pads between passes | Clean wash tray |
| Drying | Warm air on pads | Little—reduces smell |
| Plumbing (some models) | Mains water in/out | Install near a tap |
A dock cuts work but does not remove it: bags, filters, brushes, pads and dirty tanks need care. Before buying, check consumables availability in your country and reachable support. Home Assistant can track wear when the integration exposes it: robot vacuums in Home Assistant. Navigation: LiDAR, camera or gyro.
