Arduino robot kit for kids: how to choose (2026)

Is an Arduino robot kit right for your child? Age, skills, what's in the box, Arduino vs mBot vs Raspberry Pi, and first steps with the Arduino IDE.

An Arduino robot kit is a box of parts (a controller board, motors, sensors, a chassis and wires) that your child assembles and then programs in C/C++ with the free Arduino IDE. It is a step up from block-based robots: more wiring, more typing, but skills that carry over to almost any electronics project.

6. First steps

  1. Install the Arduino IDE from arduino.cc (Windows, macOS, Linux).
  2. Plug the board in by USB, choose Arduino Uno and the right port.
  3. Upload the Blink example to check everything works.
  4. Assemble the robot following the kit’s guide, then load its first example sketch.

7. Common problems

  • Robot doesn’t move after upload: battery pack switched off or flat (USB alone often can’t drive the motors).
  • Port not found: try another USB cable (some are charge-only) and install the board’s USB driver if the kit supplies one.
  • Robot spins in circles: one motor is wired the wrong way round; swap its two wires.
